The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Cotton Textile Industry- Problems and Solution” was published on February 11, 1967 and was authored by Bhaskar G. Kakatkar. In this booklet, the author highlights the issue of the Indian cotton textile industry which was the shortage of raw cotton. Next he mentions the injustice to the textile industry in imposing price control on it in these conditions and also mentions some of the distasteful features of price control on textiles. He further explains how the industry’s requirements of working capital have been going up by leap and bounds and remembers an incident which occured when steps for rationalisation were being taken in a mill which resulted in workers going on a strike. In the end, the author hopes the government to realize the tremendous potential of the cotton textile industry and refashion its policies towards it.
