The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘Commercial Banks in India- A Performance Review’ is a book form of a lecture delivered by Mr N.N Pai on the auspices of the A.D Shroff Memorial Trust in Bombay. The booklet was published on 14th July 1986.
The booklets illustrate the misconception and constraints of Commercial Banks in India. The laudable performance of the commercial bank in meeting the socio-economic objectives by advancing credits to weaker sectors like retail traders, transport operators, landless labourers, artisans, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, providing financial assistance to the industries eventually accelerating economic growth, and the rapid expansion in the number of bank branches. Mr Pai explains the need to review the cash credit mechanism and have better coordination between banks and other financial institutions. He also elaborates on the necessary measures like improving the quality of the customer service, encouraging specialised banking education, change in managerial skills and increasing profit to strengthen the public confidence in the banking system.
