The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet is titled “Revival of Swadeshi Spirit – An Answer to Smuggling” by S. R. Vakil. The essay is a very detailed account of the smuggling of precious metals like gold and silver – the ways used by the smugglers, the loops that leave space for such smuggling and the consequences of smuggling that are the cause of the suffering of the Indian economy. The author has included ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and Malcolm Muggeridge to put forth the Swadeshi spirit as an alternative to solve the problem at hand and to highlight the problems of chasing “mere material progress” only.
