The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘The concept of economic equality’ is authored by Professor P.T. Bauer and published in 1981. The author highlights the inherent contradiction of egalitarianism in open societies. He points out that people differ in economic abilities as they do in artistic and cultural abilities. He elaborates how social justice has been wrongly associated with equal incomes and evaluates the problem of the term ‘ redistribution’. He emphasizes that equality of opportunity does not lead to equality of income and explores the issue of incentive to work. He states that the concept of inequality can be applied in terms of political power and economic equality will harm enterprise and the living standards of the poor.
