The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “India: Seeing the Future in its Past” was published on February 15, 2006 and is based on a lecture delivered by Dr. Raghuram G. Ranjan in the Forum’s Golden Jubilee series on January 20, 2006 in Mumbai. . In this booklet, the author talks about India’s global recognition rapidly emerging as an economic superpower and at the same time, he brings out several gains during this phase of India’s economic development. Many of these manifested in diversified manufacturing bases with capability to produce capital-and skill-intensive goods, creation of successful institutions of higher learning, especially in science and technology, like IITs, and greater political decentralisation, etc. In the end, Dr, Ranjan concludes his lucid and thought-provoking lecture by stating that “even though India is approaching growth rates of 8 percent, let us not think the struggle is over”.
