The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet is titled “Interest Rates- An Insight” was published in June 2016 and was authored by Rajaram Ajgaonkar. The text begins with the introduction of interest and its definition. It further explains the factors that affect interest rates such as monetary policy, the growth rate, liquidity, uncertainty in the environment, and inflation. The text also mentions other factors concerning the transaction of lending like type cover and quality of security, tenure of the loan, end-use of the funds, creditworthiness of the borrower, negative interest, which can also affect the interest rates. The author explains what are the major effects of lowering interest rates and further elucidates India’s situation concerning interest rates. The text concludes with the acknowledgment of the RBI’s monetary policy in dealing with the interest rates and how it has resulted in lowering of inflation without affecting growth much, and why lowering of interest rate will be beneficial for India’s economy.
