The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘Opening up of Insurance Industry- Three Years On’ is a book form of a lecture delivered by Mr D.M. Satwalekar on the auspices of the A.D Shroff Memorial Trust in Bombay. The booklet was published on 2nd April 2004.
The booklet illustrates the tremendous outcomes of life insurance companies after opening up. The first being innovation in product development and consumer choice, the second development has been the evolution of distribution channels and the third development has been the increased emphasis on building consumer awareness I.e building strong relationships between the insurer, regulators and the consumer. Mr Satwalekar affirms the need to enforce regulations rather than bringing more regulations to avert market malpractice, establishing a simple and unified statute for the insurance industry, having better risk management as in guarantee the mortality risk premium, and the autonomy needed for the insurers to set the prices of the mortality or morbidity risk in rural India driven by profit.
