The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled “Perestroika For India” was published on August 15, 1990, and was authored by Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar. The author makes a strong case for the need to restructure India’s political and economic system, which is currently plagued by public sector monopolies and excessive bureaucratic control. He cites experiences of East European economies and China to substantiate his stance. He further argues that even though the Soviet Union itself has now declared that it has been worshipping false gods, there is hardly any echo of this change in India. He opines that we need to get away from obsolete slogans of the past and acquire the sort of respect for markets and contempt for neta-babu rule that is evident in the Communist world. In his concluding remarks, he suggests remedial steps like deregulation and the nurturing of markets, the induction of foreign competitors and investors to spur efficiency, winding up of sick units and a return to financial discipline.
