The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled “The Role of a Professional in Society” was published on September 12, 2006 and is the textual reproduction of the valedictory address at the Forum’s Annual Residential Programme on Taxation given by Y H Malegam. Mr. Malegam emphasizes the need to not only possess domain expertise, but also commit to being honest and work with integrity and objectivity as a professional in today’s world. He proposes that in a developing world, professionals must have high ethics and morals, setting the standards for all other important actors in society at large. He talks about the growing inequality between the privileged and under-privileged and other issues like rising corruption. He therefore believes that professionals of the modern world must take up the mantle of not giving into petty, selfish motives and working for the benefit of all.
