The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Population And Economic Liberalization” was published on November 18, 1995 and was authored by S.L. Rao. The author argues that the economic freedom that started in India since 1991 should extend itself to population policy. He further emphasizes on the importance of women, female literary, female labour force participation and urbanization and medical facilities. Then, the text discusses Indian population control policies and family planning policies of India. The text also reviews the experience of China and some of the emerging ‘tiger’ economies of SouthEast Asia. In addition to this, the author also talks about Indian experiences including 16 states, socio-economic impact of population growth, implications for government policies, and the need for economic liberalization. The text ends with concluding remarks by the author and references.
