The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘Are there monopolies and concentration of economic power in India’ is authored by Arvind Narottam Lalbhai and H. Venkatasubbiah published in 1964. In his article ‘A naive analysis of Economic Power’, H. Venkatasubbiah discusses the outcome of the Mahalanobis Committee and criticises its specific conclusions like enlarging the public sector to counter the private sector. He defines economic power and highlights how the Committee understood the term vaguely. Arvind Lalbhai raises concerns about the government’s obsession with monopolies in his article ‘Government’s obsession with monopolies- a threat to economic progress’. He illustrates how false perception of profit is hampering the economy. He further evaluates the mechanisms of saving and reinvestment, diversification of economic activities, and the policies adopted by the USA government. He recommends ramping up the production to accelerate economic development and warns about the dangers of State monopoly.
