The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘Reform of Direct Taxes’ is authored by K.R, Ramamani and published in 1983. The author explores the origin and definition of direct taxes. He analyses the current taxation system, observes that unnecessary taxes need to be avoided, examines the debate about corporate taxation, and points out the fallacious method of calculating taxes of public enterprises. He highlights how concessions in statute books are illusionary. He elaborates that there is a correlation between economic growth and taxation policies. He recommends that a simple tax cut is more beneficial than multiple tax reliefs, reduction in rate for smaller companies, restructuring tax systems, and removal of the compulsory deposit scheme.
