The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Monopoly Capitalism” was published on January 1, 1970. The text covers the elements of monopoly, the diversification of industry in India, the idle capacity in Indian industries and the manner in which capacity had been built up in the new industries in India. Then the text talks about a general reflection of monopolistic tendencies and examines the industries through a data table. Further the text discusses the statistics relating to industrial licenses, closely regulated key industries, young protected industries and old established ordinary industries. The text also talks about the sharp rises in the prices of sugar and cotton manufacturers after the removal of war-time controls in 1949-50.
