The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet is titled “The Indian Milk Problem” is the text derived from a public lecture delivered by D. N. Khurody. The speaker himself is known for his great contribution to the milk industry in India. The speaker starts off by pointing out that India, despite being in possession of about one fourth of the world’s cattle, is extremely behind in the production of milk. He analyses the causes of such a low performance in production of milk. He points out the existence of both – bad productivity and bad population growth in terms of the cattle. Further, there is a comparison done between the nature of milk production and crop production, the speaker makes technical references wherever necessary and goes on to discuss the programmes for cross breeding, the case of Greater Bombay, Aarey colony and that of Anand. He elucidates the idea of “Milk Undertaking” for which he has witnessed positive results and is optimistic of the situation if the necessary steps were to be taken without delay.
