The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Why are prices rising” was published in 1962 and was authored by G.D. Somani, S. Venkataraman, G. R. Chandrasekariya, M. H. Hasham Premji, and Prof. B. R. Shenoy. The first article focused on the rising trends in prices due to the third year plan, and the imbalances and shortages in the economy as the factors. It highlighted the need for the review of the fiscal and monetary policies to facilitate production during that era. The next article focused on the private enterprise as the reason for the rise and brought focus to the government’s regulatory aim in introducing state trading and co-operative marketing. The article following that emphasized the continuance of the private trading mechanism as a viable solution in overcoming the availability and supply problem. The concluding articles accentuated the increase in production in both the public and private sectors for meeting the standards of living.
