The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Economics Of Freedom” was published on February 12, 1965 and was authored by M. R. Masani. In this booklet, the author makes an effort to ascertain the validity of the assumption that a completely nationalised or socialised economy can co-exist with the kind of political liberty that is guaranteed by our Constitution. Then he talks about the collectivisation of land in accordance with the Stalinist pattern which led Russia to the liquidation of millions of peasants in China. Further, the text examines the widespread assumption that people in India can sustain democratic government alongside a State monopoly of economic ownership of industry, trade and culture. Then the text examines the principles that help in the exercise of the wide and arbitrary powers. In the end, the author believes that a mixed economy where free enterprise and state enterprise each have an equal and autonomous role to play functioning alongside of each other to meet the needs of the people, is the best possible system for this country.
