The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following book titled, “Controls And Freedom” was published on December 8, 1960 and was authored by M. A. Sreenivasan. In this booklet, the author discusses the controls and freedom and compares the talk of controls in a free economy to the talks of Kangaroos in Malabar Hill or of a strike in Peking. Further, he states that controls are a necessary ingredient and preservative of freedom and the controls that have a rightful place in a free economy are those that provide the maximum of assistance with the minimum of interference. He then suggests that the controls in a free economy should be like traffic control on a busy highway- strict regulation that doesn’t impede, but helps to make the flow of traffic safer and smoother. At the end, the author talks about the remedial measures by administering a few antidotes.
