The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Nationalisation at the Crossroads” was published on April 8, 1962, and was authored by Prof. Amul Desai. He begins his paper from an examination of the context within which socialism and the idea of nationalising industries emerged. He proceeds to describe how times and economic conditions today have changed and how such policies are no longer relevant. He takes up a sector analysis of industries where nationalisation took place in the west, as well as their consequences. He then compares it with the situation in India. He ultimately argues against nationalising industries because it is neither economically effective nor practical.
