The following booklet titled “State Capitalism Marches On” and authored by Dharamsey M. Khatau highlights the recent amendments in the Industries Act and the Banking Companies Act as encroachments on the private sector by the State. The suppression of entrepreneurial freedom as exemplified by the nationalisation of Life Insurance are visible signs of impending losses to the economy. While the crunch in cement production reflected inefficiency on the part of free enterprises, the suggestions of cement importations at zero profits were already explored by the enterprises. This serious infringement on the fundamental right to freedom of trade in a democratic society without exploring avenues other than direct state interference is considered as a failure of the democratic foundations of the Constitution according to the author. The author further highlights the need for encouraging free enterprise as a pillar of economic progress.
