The following booklet titled, “Whither Indian Urbanisation?” was authored by the eminent authority on transport and urban problems, Dr. F. P. Antia. Through his work, Dr. Antia illustrates the importance of urban planning, especially in light of the rapid increase in the Indian population and the subsequent urbanization movement. The author analyses the findings from various detailed studies and surveys, which look into the appalling state of living conditions, housing accommodations, basic amenities such as clean drinking water, lavatories, etc. in principal cities such as Bombay and Calcutta. In addition to this, the author also elaborately discusses their suggestions, which primarily calls for, amongst other measures, the provision of more employment opportunities in and the all-round development of rural areas and industries to reduce the migration of rural workers to the already congested cities, in order to alleviate the extreme strain on resources.
