The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “A Survey of State Enterprises in India” was published on May 8, 1962, and was authored by the founder, A D Shroff, himself. As mentioned in the title, this essay examines the performance of public sector enterprises since Independence. Mr. Shroff discusses the lack of reliable data from the government regarding the same, and uses data provided by The Economic Times for his analysis. He examines the finances of state sector units, and the various issues in accounting in different states. The economic inefficiency of the sector is well portrayed in this booklet.
