The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet is titled “Decade of Determination to Achieve Sustainable Development” was published in January 1998 and was authored by Prof. U.R. Rao. The booklet is the textual representation of the 14th T.A. Pai Memorial Lecture delivered by Prof. U.R. Rao in Hyderabad in January 1997. The author acknowledges various challenges that India is facing such as large-scale illiteracy, low agricultural productivity, industrial backwardness, inadequate infrastructure, severe environmental degradation, and a rapidly growing population. The author talks about the state of post-independent India concerning development and its positive as well as negative repercussions. The author suggests the application of science and technology through the implementation of rational socio-economic policies will be beneficial for sustainable development and to initiate sustainable fast growth. The author concludes with the view that the fundamental aspect of long-term sustainable development has to be based on the paradigm of technological innovations, economic determinism, and physical constraints imposed by environmental imperatives of striking a judicious balance between ultimate exploitability and regenerative capacity.
