The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘Planning and Nationalization: Rethinking in India and Abroad’ and is authored by L.N Birla and Dr. N. Das. In his article ‘Consumer, forgotten factor in Indian planning’, L.N. Birla criticizes the influence of ideology on planning, lack of balance between producer and consumer goods, increasing state expenditure, higher taxation, and loyalty to heavy industries. He suggests learning from previous plans, modernizing agriculture, and focusing on consumer goods industries. In another article ‘An alternative to wishful planning’, L.N. Birla critically analyses the concept of planning and its drawbacks. He recommends investment in the consumer goods industry and to focus on building infrastructure. Dr. N. Das talks about the importance of nationalization in socialism, failure of public ownership, and case studies of specific countries in his talk ’Planning and Nationalization: Rethinking in India and Abroad’.
