The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Customer Protection in Banks – Emerging” was published on December 3, 2012 and was authored by Dr. K. C. Chakrabarty. This booklet thematically focuses on customer protection of banks and provides the rationale for protection of financial services consumers. The text reflects on global and domestic initiatives relating to promotion of consumer rights and financial education. At the same time, it highlights several policy imperatives concerning issues of inflation adjusted adequate return for depositors, mitigating discriminatory practices, transparency in pricing deposits and credit, reduction in charges of financial services, strengthening of modern banking services, and leveraging ICT based technology.
