The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘Productivity in Japan: Lessons for India’ is authored by S.A. Sapre and published in 1982. The author praises the economic growth of Japan after the Second World War and compares it to the Indian economy. He analyses the factors like better utilization of capital, transfer of goods from agriculture and industry, greater gains from economies of sale, increasing use of upto date knowledge, etc that contributed to Japanese growth. He observes that the Japanese government and industry work together.  He highlights the key features of Japanese management like strategic importance of personnel management, national interest comes first, interdependence, continuous training, etc. He then explains why industrial relations are better in Japan as compared to developed countries like the US and the UK.
