The following booklet titled, “Telephone Communication and Urban Development In India” was published in 1977 and it analyses the existing telephone system of Bombay city. Authored by Dr. Rashmi Mayor, this publication is based on a presentation at a Bombay Civic Trust meeting held on 6th November, 1976. As a world-renowned futurologist, Dr. Rashmi Mayor writes about his firm belief in the scope of Telephone Communication as an indicator of modern development. By presenting empirical evidence, he highlights the myriad of issues faced by consumers caused by either technological issues, lack of managerial efficiency or other human factors. He concludes by offering constructive suggestions, which call for public cooperation in sustaining the telephone units and include setting up of public telephones at several locations within the city to increase accessibility to the services, in the hopes of developing a telephone system which could greatly contribute to India’s economic development, while serving public needs.
