The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “The foreign exchange crisis & some remedies ” was published in 1958 and was authored by the founder himself. Mr. Shroff called immediate attention to the thriving problem existing in the late ’50s, the problem pertaining to that of the foreign exchange crisis in India. He emphasized the root of the problem in regard to the miscalculation and underestimation of requirements of foreign exchange resources to attain the objectives of the then second five-year plan. He also highlighted the Suez crisis which was one of the causation factors for the rise in prices and increased freight remedy. Lastly, the author focused on remedies for the problem and construed that in certain quarters, the devaluation of the rupee and augmentation of exports might be viable means of solution for addressing the problem.
