The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled “Limits of Nationalisation” was published on January 1, 1970 and was authored by Dr. John Matthai. Dr. Matthai argues that nationalisation should be the exception and free enterprise should be the norm. He examines the perspectives of philosophers including Karl Marx and John Keynes to propose why socialism as a government policy is fallacious. He examines the specific case of India, including the policy of central planning introduced through Five Year Plans drafted by the Planning Commission. He concludes by making several suggestions on how best to proceed with economic policy making.
