The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet is titled “Nurturing Management Talent in India” was published in September 2000, and was authored by Kumar Mangalam Birla. This booklet is a textual representation of the acceptance speech on the occasion of being awarded the “Management Man of the Year” Award by the Bombay Management Association on 26th May 2000 in Mumbai. The author elucidates talent as the key resource of a business, what is talent, and the changing nature of talent, why has the talent issue become so critical? And how India is well placed to nurture talent. Further, the author explains what retards talent in India and major talent-related issues that Indian organizations are encountering. The author concludes with the view that nurturing talent and keeping it here and putting it to good use requires resolving some tough quality of life issues.
