In the booklet ‘The A.D Shroff Memorial Trust : A report on first five years’, the author begins by briefly mentioning about the A.D. Shroff, who was one of those rare gifted individuals who leave an indelible mark on their environment and a strong impression in the hearts and minds of those who come across them. Whenever the history of India’s Industrial development will be written, especially Industrial finance, his name will surely be written. He also contributed to economic thinking and public education in economic affairs. He was one of the architects of free India’s banking and insurance business. Shroff was amongst the earliest proponents of free enterprise in India. He served on a number of committees including the very well known Shroff Committee of finance for the private sector set up by the Reserve bank of India. A.D Shroff started the Forum of Free Enterprise which has stimulated public thinking in the country on economic affairs and particularly free enterprise and its connection with the democratic way of life. The idea of setting up a trust in the memory of A.D. Shroff, for continuing economic educational activities received great responses from his friends and admirers in the light of his inevitable contribution. The Trust started its activities from 1967 onwards till 1972 and during these years, donations were collected and activities were taken up one by one. The genesis of the Trust is to be found in a tribute paid by J.R.D Tata at the Sheriff’s public meeting which was held to condole the death of A.D.Shroff. Mr Tata recalled the contributions of A.D.Shroff with much pleasure and addressed his achievements and work with great effort. Some of the activities that the Trust took up were – a memorial public lecture every year on banking, industrial finance and insurance. Organized the A.D Shroff memorial education competitions across colleges in Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and other educational centres. The Trust also awarded two prizes of Rs 250 to the students of Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics , who stand first in the Finance group of M.Com and banking and Finance papers I B.Com degree examinations. Furthermore to the tally, the Trust has helped Public Institutions to buy books on economics. The Forum of Free enterprise which was founded by A.D.Shroff, provided facilities of office and staff to the Trust so that it did not have to incur any expenses on a separate establishment. The author concludes by pointing out the fact that A.D. Shroff was indeed a champion of free enterprise and a great leader of business and industry and an economist whose predictions have proved right over the years.
