The following booklet titled “Indian Economic Development 1950-1980 : An Assessment” was published in October, 1981, and was authored by Dr. R. M. Honavar. The text is based on the A. D. Shroff Memorial Lecture delivered under the auspices of the Madras Centre of the Forum of Free Enterprise. The author starts by giving the historical context of the newly independent countries of the world and the First Five Year Plan formulated in 1951 by Indian economic experts. The author compares economic growth in terms of food security, per capita growth, development, trade, foreign affairs etc. The author also draws a comparison between China and India due to the economic and social similarities in both the countries. Then the author specially puts emphasis on states that have done good and the policies they followed and the states that lacked with the policies they followed. Dr. Honavar also brings in light the masterstroke of green revolution as well as white revolution and yellow revolution and their consequences. Moreover, the question that the author addresses is ‘Would India fare better in the next thirty years?’
