The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled ‘A Socialist Society cannot be Democratic’ is authored by T. Mathew and published in 1960. The author discusses the meaning of democracy, its historical development, and conditions like liberty, equality needed for sustenance. He further highlights the importance of rights, its origin, significance of property rights. He discusses institutionalized inequality in the form of caste. He states democracy will prevail where liberty and equality are operating ideals. He elaborates the value of education and the role of political parties and opposition in a democratic society. He emphasizes the importance of rule of law. He talks about the differences between socialism and democracy. He underlines the necessity of developing moral and democratric values along with institutions.
