The following booklet titled “A Free Press Is Linked With Free Enterprise & A Free Society” authored by Dr. Sachin Sen commences by highlighting the necessity of autonomous institutions in a democratic society by citing the example of the Press which must serve society with a soul of its own and not as a subserved entity. While democratic governments have to curb anti-state activities, such sweeping powers should not be used to impose curtailments on any dissenting opinions, which might lead to a withering of the State and the hegemonic rule of one particular party. The author further comments on the present nature of States, which are required to provide social service goods that necessitates objective truths, which deems scientific mechanisms of assessment as fundamental. The Press thus has to act as a medium of the expression of various facets of truth to truly serve the cause of liberal democracy. The freedom of the Press is tantamount to a fundamental institutional freedom with the primary objective serving society through the widening of citizen’s horizons of knowledge.
