The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled “Accountability in Public Service” was published on February 4, 2011 and was authored by N Vittal. The main issue that the author addresses in this article is the rampant corruption that is prevalent in the administrative system. Public opinion of the Indian bureaucracy has deteriorated over the years leaving a distinct contempt in the attitude of the common man towards the public service machinery. Mr. Vittal critically evaluates the state of the system and identifies the key problem areas. He concludes by offering several suggestions to improve the state of affairs, including active participation of informed citizens and civil society in holding the system accountable.
