The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled “Air Passengers In India- Safety And Service” was published on February 15, 1989, and is based on the talks delivered by S.A. Sabavala and J.N. Guzder at the meeting organised by the Forum of Free Enterprise to discuss the concerns with the air services in India. Over the years the air transport has witnessed a massive widening of its consumer base and acquired a ‘mass’ character in some sense. However, the air services have grossly failed the country as argued by Sabavala and Guzder. Both the speakers describe numerous instances highlighting the plight of air passengers and unsatisfactory performance of the air services in both safety and services. The speakers make a strong case against the state monopolization of the industry and recommend various measures like putting ground staff and cabin crew through Customer Orientation courses, linking travel agencies with Indian Airlines Computer Reservation System and improving the organizational structure of the Indian Airlines.
