The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Fundamental Rights in India” was published on October 9, 1969. The booklet contains two articles which examine the topic at hand from different perspectives. The first article, titled ‘A Historical Background’, was authored by B Shiva Rao and provides the socio-historical context regarding citizenship and rights. The second article, titled ‘It is dangerous to tamper with Fundamental Rights’, was authored by M V Pylee. This article examines various cases where fundamental rights have been under question and discusses their outcomes. Drawing upon the history of such legal situations from the Indian context, the author argues that constitutional values and fundamental rights need to be protected from being tampered with.
