The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Growth, Resilience and Reform: Reflections on Post-crisis Policy Challenges” was published on November 5, 2011 and was authored by Dr. Subir Gokaran. In this booklet, the author raises many relevant issues and the challenges we have faced and are likely to face on our onward journey, especially at this juncture when the developed world is going through a turbulent phase of low growth, high unemployment and possibility of sovereign default by some European countries. The text analyses the dramatic transformation the Indian economy went through and draws attention to the increased globalisation of the economy as evident from the rise in the ratio of overall external trade to GDP. The text talks about capital controls and the imperative need for diversification of the GDP to promote growth and resilience with thrust on manufacturing which alone can contribute to rise in gainful employment.
