The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “Price control on drugs ” was published in 1970 and was authored by Prof. P.A.Gaitonde, N.H Israni, and Champakal Zaveri. The first article focused on the price re-allocation that was being sought and controlled by the Drugs Prices Control Order of 1970. The article highlighted the dire economic implications of the order and questioned its promulgation. The next article titled, “Drug price control and the consumer,” focused on the increasing government taxes and the levy on the products/materials and the consequent effect it had on the production of drugs back then. The article called attention to safeguard consumer interests and the subsequent development of the industry through it. The concluding article titled, “Will there be a shortage of drugs,” pointed out the distressing effects of the amendment on the Indian sector. And thereby pointed to the need for rationalization of price structure for the sector’s viability.
