The Forum of Free Enterprise was a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A.D Shroff and was established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum published booklets to further its objects. The following booklet titled, “State Trading in Foodgrains”, is the textual reproductions of the talks that were given at the Convention on State Trading in Foodgrains in Bombay, on March 13, 1959. The speakers include A D Shroff, Devji Rattansey, Ranchhoddas Jethabhai, M H Hasham Premji and Prof R K Amin. Mr Shroff’s address, titled ‘A Danger to Democratic Way of Life’ touches upon the interventionist and authoritative elements in the food redistribution policies of the government. He gives other examples of industries that have declined due to state intervention to make his arguments. Mr Rattansey advances the cause of free markets as an efficient alternative to the existing system. Mr Premji talks of the sentimental angle politicians have taken to garner support for the policy in a rather populist manner. Lastly, Prof Amin provides an economic background and perspective to the entire debate.
