The Forum of Free Enterprise is a non-political organization founded in 1956 by A. D. Shroff, and has been established to educate public opinion in India on free enterprise and a democratic way of life. The Forum publishes booklets to further its objects. The following booklet is titled “Transparency, Accountability RTI Act & All that” was published in June 2016, and was authored by Maja Daruwala and Shailesh Gandhi. Both the authors offer an extensive reflection on the landmark judgment in Jayantilal N. Misry case concerning the transparency and access to relevant information from the bank. Both the authors are concerned about the resistance to transparency and accountability and more specifically RTI Act from the political system. Maja Daruwala highlights the challenges of cronyism and financial irregularity; of subverted CBI, the bureaucracy and financial system; watchdog laws and machinery becoming hollow organizations. Shailesh Gandhi articulates his deep anguish about the nature of recent political discourse relating to RTI and pleads in the Parliament. Further, given their passion and commitment towards transparency and accountability in the system of governance and public life both the authors offer their respective views and suggestions on what is the way ahead.
