Summary

This January 1963 issue of Swatantra Newsletter, issued by the Central Office of the Swatantra Party, concentrates on the political and constitutional consequences of the 1962 Chinese invasion. Its opening reports argue that the national emergency should end once the cease-fire has replaced active hostilities, warning that extraordinary powers could become a permanent surrender of democracy. Across these materials, the preferred response to China is a combination of restored constitutional government, military strengthening, cooperation with Western democracies, improved relations with Pakistan and Nepal, and political resistance to Communism. Later pages document Swatantra Party activity in Bombay, Delhi, Gujarat, Orissa, Mysore, and Rajasthan, including fundraising, organisational expansion, public meetings, defence mobilisation, and criticism of the Congress government. The final annexure reproduces Rajagopalachari’s argument that the emergency had become permanent in substance and that democracy must be preserved through continued opposition.
