Summary

The January–February 1965 issue of Swatantra Newsletter reports on the Swatantra Party’s organisation, electoral activity, economic programme, foreign-policy positions, and state-unit work. It announces the first meeting of the newly elected 170-member General Council in Bombay, lists fourteen Kerala Assembly candidates, and reproduces extracts from C. Rajagopalachari’s Kerala speeches attacking Congress rule, warning against a three-cornered contest that could benefit the Communists, and urging opposition forces to cooperate against both Communists and Congressmen.

The issue presents Minoo Masani’s proposals for a 50 per cent reduction in direct and indirect taxation, a “holiday from planning,” decontrol, and greater reliance on private and corporate enterprise. Other reports criticise the Fourth Plan, food controls, compulsory procurement, land acquisition, and state administration, while advocating free enterprise, private trade, agricultural incentives, and individual rights. Rajaji and K. M. Munshi also address non-alignment, China, Russia, Malaysia, and South Vietnam; state-unit reports document party-building and election preparations in Andhra, Bombay, Gujarat, Kerala, Madras, and Mysore. The closing statement, “Swatantra Party Is The People’s Party,” summarises the party’s claims to represent consumers, defend free enterprise, limit state activity, protect property and individual rights, and reduce defence burdens.
