Deepak Kumar Lal

1940–2003

Deepak Lal was an Indian economist and an important contributor to the classical liberal tradition. His work focused particularly on economic development, economic policy, markets, and the consequences of government intervention. He was associated with arguments for economic freedom and was critical of centralised economic planning and policies that restricted markets. Lal also wrote extensively on India and its economic development, examining the institutional and policy choices that shaped the country’s economic trajectory. His work connected economic analysis with a broader defence of individual choice, markets, and limited government, making him an important Indian voice in the classical liberal tradition.
