Edward Shils wrote for Quest, the journal of ideas sponsored by the Indian Committee for Cultural Freedom, appearing in 3 issues of the archive’s run (Vol. I No. 3 (Dec. ‘55—Jan. ‘56) to No. 25 (April/June 1960)).

Quest’s contributor note in Vol. I No. 3 (Dec. ‘55—Jan. ‘56), p. 68 reads:

Edward Shils is professor of Sociology at Chicago University. He is the author of several books on political philosophy and current affairs, the latest of which, The Torment of Secrecy will shortly be published in America. Professor Shils’ study of British Intellectuals appeared in ENCOUNTER recently. During the past several months he has been in India surveying intellectual attitudes and behaviour.

Quest’s contributor note in No. 24 (Jan./Mar. 1960), p. 103 reads:

EDWARD SHILS, a distinguished American sociologist, is director of Social Science and Research Centre at the University of Chicago. Author of The Torment of Secrecy. His essay on the Indian Intellectual is an abridgement of certain sections of his forthcoming book on the subject, to be published by Allen and Unwin. It is based on extensive interviews conducted during a year in India. The author would welcome criticism of his ideas by Indian intellectuals.
